Before we talk about how to make alkaline water, let’s cover a little bit about what exactly it is. Keep in mind that there are many ways to create it, but the quality will vary greatly depending on which method you use.

What is Alkaline Water?

Well, it’s pretty much water that has a pH level of about 7.4 or higher on the pH scale (tap is about 7 or lower which is slightly acidic).

1. Baking Soda (Sodium Bicarbonate)

The water produced in this way will probably taste really bad (unless you enjoy the taste of baking soda).

It is however a very cheap alkalizing method and it’s also very easy to do.

2. Alkaline Tablets

The step above baking soda is alkaline tablets. The reason we don’t recommend using just baking soda is because we don’t feel its a good idea to rely on just one type of bicarbonate as your only alkaline mineral, even if it’s just for supplementing (and not used as a long term treatment option).

There are mineral supplements available that have much better range of alkaline minerals and do a better job than baking soda.

Cons of Alkaline Mineral Tablets

  • Not rational to take more than once or twice a day

  • Requires a lot of minerals to obtain a high pH
  • Meant to be used only as a supplement, not a water treatment solution

4. Alkaline pH Drops

Adding alkaline pH drops is another cheap and convenient way to alkalize your water.

These drops can bring your regular tap water to a pH of about 8-9 on average giving you most of the known benefits of alkalinity. However, this method does have a point of diminishing return. On top of that, you also don’t receive the filtration and antioxidant benefits achieved through ionization.

If you’re just looking for a quick way to increase your pH level and you already plan on using some sort of filter, then alkaline drops is a fantastic approach.

I think a filter would be the best option for me because, it will offer dual filtration and simultaneously will bring up the pH level of the drinking water. Otherwise, we can try delicious lemon juice or alkaline drops for a quick boost, as rightly said here in the article.
